Maxi 210 connections

Postby brewpete » Wed Jun 27, 2018 17:56

I have recently bought a Maxi 210 chiller to connect up to my 200L FV. The chiller has the usual re-circ pipes (which curve upwards) and 2 product lines (1L and 2L).

I understand the usual way to connect it up is to use the re-circ line to connect to the FV and then the pump in the Maxi 210 pumps the coolant around the FV.

However, instead of using the re-irc line, would it be possible to use an external solar pump to pump water through the product lines on the Maxi 210 and then to the FV? I could then use an STC-1000 controller to switch the solar pump on/off as required to get the desired temperature?

Thanks

I also have a maxi 210, if I cooled my FV with it I would do as you are suggesting with a pump, ideally you need an ice bath to form to provide instant cooling, so its necessary to leave the chiller on all the time, using the re-circ line would mean starting up and shutting down the maxi or an inline electronic valve. For extra cooling you could loop around and run it through both product lines extended the chill contact time.

I have been giving this some thought as its sat on the shelf ATM.

The problem I foresee with that is the water in the product lines freezing when the pump switches off (remember the product lines run through ice).

A fine beer may be judged with only one sip, but it's better to be thoroughly sure.

Good point, for me I am sticking with fridges and flatbottom FVs, seems cheaper and easier. Maybe a cheap vodka or glycol solution?
