pros, n cons of tesco elements,
pro's
Cheap
readily available
having been used before there is a few how-to s out there
cons
tight spiral coil - a minor pita to scrub back to shiny after use
Can leave an untidy back needing extra work/expense to shroud
fwiw my first boiler worked very well with 2 x tesco elements fitted
when i decided to upgrade i bought a few lemon elements some that rusted, others lost the silver plate revealing a very soft yellow brass metal (lead content??)
of the elements i have used i can recommend 3 types from my limited experience..
1) X tesco kettle elements
2) £5 ebay 1.5kw kettle elements complete with plastic backing shroud
3) Mrlards 100% stainless steel Low Watt Density Brewing elements @2.4 and 3 kw
if building a 5-10 gallon brew kit now i would look very hard at the ebay china 1.5kw kettle elements, 2 together can get plugged into a 13a socket, and simple power control can be had from unpluging 1 or 2 elements -- i would look at 3 or 4 for a boil kettle, and 2 are sufficient to heat a hlt
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/AC-220V-1-5KW ... 43bbcd064bthe open design mean easy scrub back to shiny post brew, the simple back shroud save lots of time n effort,
and are cheap to replace should one fail, and again in a failure situation with 3 or 3 fitted if the one your using for the boil fails u have unused backups ready

element failure should be considered we are pushing elements to boil hotter than water liquor for 90 mins, not what was on the original design spec im sure..

my ol 60l hlt heated by 2 x ebay china elements - not sufficient to maintain a boil lid off.

Tesco elements not as easy to scrub back to shiny (though done post boil religiously)
the homebrewbuilder LWD elements

just a light dusting of crud post boil

wipe off almost

just my limited experience, hope it helps
