Hippy juice

Postby BrewWoo » Thu Jul 31, 2014 17:32

Finally got around to getting some fruit tea bags. Do I need to add WGJ and raisins? Or can they be left out?

you want grape juice and raisins to give it a winelike quality
White grape is hard to find in some places lately, but red will do

Still seems to be plenty of both around me locally.

My first tea bag wine was lovely, even at bottling!

Picked up some red and white grape juice, which would you recommend?

blackcurrant i would probably go for a red grape juice, just more fitting and would probably be good as a rose. i personally would try and finish it as a medium rather than a dry. although hopefully someone with a little more experience will pop by soon to tell me I'm talking rubbish :)

I usually let it finish dry and then sweeten it if it's needed.

I went with red grape juice mainly as I wanted to keep the dark red colour it already had from the teabags. It's a lovely colour.

I'm surprised just how much crud has fallen to the bottom already. Only put it on a few days ago. It's still blipping away quite happily.

Think I've killed this. After taking the last picture, I went on and did some other things and forgot about it. Which means it was left in the window of a very hot conservatory. It's stopped bubbling completely, no bubbles, nothing rising to the top, added a touch more yeast and nutrients and got nothing out of it.

So, add finings and see how it is? It's already starting to separate on its own. (top inch is clearer than the rest)

Oops..

you could retrieve a sample from the clearer part and have a little taste.

maybe worth following moleys guide to restarting a stuck fermentation viewtopic.php?f=18&t=3273

i would say see what it tastes like, if its horrible then start from scratch, if it just tastes sweet try to restart, even if you did kill the yeast i would be amazed if you have made an enviroment where no more can survive

Did you manage to start your hippy juice again, BW?
Just racked 6 dj's of various wow's after I thought I'd killed off the yeast in a hot room.
But, after following moley's guide, they all carried on as normal.
Worth giving it a go. :thumb:

I haven't as I've no yeast at the moment, but as soon as I get some I'll definitely give it a go because so far it smells and tastes lovely.

Me and my partner heard a bang early this morning and thought we were getting broken into, after going round the house and finding nothing we went back to sleep.

Only now have I realised what it was.

I put a rubber stopper in the hippy juice as I thought it was done for. Only I'd moved it to a cooler spot and things had started up again blowing out the bung with a mighty bang.

I've topped it up with water a gentle swirl and all seems well. It's not exactly gone off like a rocket, but it's going.

looks just like mine - we are just starting to drink our Blackcurrant Twinings hippy juice - not bad at all but next time I will use a few less tea bags.

Thought I'd update this as I've just taken a SG reading and it's down to .990, it tastes very sharp and dry, but I'm hoping it'll mellow out once it's been in the bottle a month or two. Will get some pictures up when I get around to bottling it.
