adding fruit

Postby mark1964 » Wed Sep 09, 2015 18:28

The last time we added fruit we did it in the secondary and there wasn't that much taste. Just wondering if its ok to add to the fruit in the primary fermenter. The beer has been fermenting for 2 days at present

No experience with wheat beers but I have made a cracking strawberry beer. from my knowledge you will get less flavour by putting it in the primary rather than secondary simply because the fermentation will overpower the flavours. how much did you add last time? its all dependant on the amount of fruit you add too. to bring the strawberry flavour out I needed 5kg for a 23l brew!!

Kegged:
Simecoe APA (HBF Donation)

Bottled:
Galaxy Pale Ale, Woodfordes Wherry, Bella Brew Pale Ale, Strawberry and vanilla Pale Ale, Mixed fruits cider, Elderflower and grapefruit fizz.

Maturing:
Rhubarb Wine, WOW rose', Elderberry wine, Mixed berries wine, Elderflower and grapefruit wine, Elderberry wine.

Next Up:
German Pilsner, Guinness Clone, Chateau De Roi selection kit, Strawberry and lime cider.

Mango doesn't really taste like mango in a beer imo. You can get 2kg bags from sainsburys or tins of pulp, i think morrisons do them, in the ethnic food section (not world foods, you want the one with the big bags of rice and sundries, foreign pop etc.)

Got some already but might not use them. Might do raspberries or blueberries instead

You need a LOT of blueberries too, my blueberry wheat had near 5kg in 18 litres and the flavour is still very mild.

I recently added 1KG blackberries to 10L, I needed to double it. Nice though, if a little pink.
