Brew Like A Monk - Stan Hieronymus

If you like Belgian beers this is a great read. I've gone through it cover to cover loads of times and I learn something new each time. It has helped me pinpoint quite a few errors in my technique already.

It goes through all the Belgian Trappist breweries, with quite a bit of detail about what ingredients they use. Some have suggested the information isn't bang up to date but it's very helpful nonetheless. You don't get exact clone recipes but there is a lot of information about the beers, like the types of ingredients and mash / fermentation schedules so you can compare them. It also covers abbey breweries and various other popular trappist inspired brews like Duvel, Leffe, Affligem and a variety of others.

The second half of the book is about how american brewers have tried to take on making Belgian style beers, how to make recipes for the main types and how they are judged in competitions. There are some recipes to try and also pointers that are great to get you started, and some guides to the types of flavours you get with commonly available yeasts at various temperatures.

This book won't allow you to clone trappist beers but it's very helpful to get you started making your own recipes and understanding the kinds of processes you need to follow.

Probably my all-time favourite brewing book, this. Absolutely one of the very best! One to go back to time and time again. Nice pictures as well.

Barry (phettebs) sent me the book, it's a good read.

Once I consistently get my bitter how I want it will be the time I look to other brews.
