Bulldog - Evil Dog Double IPA

Kit Brewer, Tell us what you think of the kits you are making, what's good, what's bad, and what should we avoid.

just tried mine, a f/v sample its down to 1.013 and still going. Nasty alcohol taste to it but its still raw, when the sg is stable Ill add the kit hops and taste before bottling.
Then Ill decide if I to need to dry hop, what hops did you use?

Please let us know how the batch matures :)

The Kit was well presented.
Image

  • It had the biggest packet of yeast I've seen!
  • Two foil wrapped packets of hops.
  • Hopped liquid malt extract in a plastic pouch.
  • Instructions.

I warmed the pouch in hot water prior to use, the pouch was easy to use and easy to rinse with cooled boiled water.
However I feel that the LME might not be as thick or viscous as the  LME  in cans.
I made it up to about 23liters by weight but I may need to adjust that latter.
I used an air stone to get oxygen into it, the stone was running slowly so I gave it a hour or so .

When the yeast was rehydrated I pitched at 22°C and fermented initially at 18 °C in the hope that that it wouldn't escape the fermenter my biggest fermenter about 30litres.

22Jun2014.    OG.   ~1.065 at 20°C
23Jun2014.   Temp set to 20.3°C.
27Jun2014.  SG.      1.040. Temp set to 23°C
03Jul2014.    SG.     1.013. Temp set to 24°C.  ABV.   6.7%
07Jul2014.   SG.       1.004.  ABV.      7.8%. Hop bags and Isinglass added.

Tastes like evil cough medicine!!

Going into bottles n kegs on 09Jul2014

Any updates on those that have brewed this? I might go for this on my next one.

Cyber, all I can say is that this is the best brew I've ever done, and probably the best beer I've ever tasted - it's absolutely lethal though. It's definitely worth 25 quid, if you like a lush hoppy beer with loads of character this is the one

Mine was pants, and I know how to brew a kit.

Must have been a bad batch because myself and 2 others bought it at the same time. All were disappointing.

Lee, when did you add the hop bags? I did both about a week before kegging

It was around a week, maybe longer.

I'm dry hopping it again in the keg to try and hop it up.

I'll let you know. It will be in a couple of weeks before I can get things together and start the brew.

I done this about 2 months back, think I over primmed it so its a bit on the fizzy side but flavour wise its very nice.

Strong, hoppy flavours and certainly packs a punch. Still needs another good bit conditioning in the bottles IMO though, maybe come back at the end of the summer.

Popped one of these in the fridge whilst I cut the lawn and did some DIY. Just popped it. The yeast is very loose compared to other brews and gets stirred up very easily. However, it tastes fantastic. The harshness appears to of gone leaving a hippy flavour and aroma similar to peaches and berries. Not sure how temp effects the harshness but it really tastes much better. I'm impressed.

got this kit a few weeks ago & hopped it, seems to have finished fermentation & is at correct gravity, but it is still cloudy as hell! has anyone used finings or did you leave it?

My most successful dry hopping was when the hops went in after fermentation had finished. I then let the hops in for 3 weeks at about 12 degrees. Sounds like people are disappointed with this kit but it could be the hopping schedule. Just a thought.

Mine was / is cloudy as hell as well Paul. Still a great beer if you have the patience to leave it. I didn't but finishing them off now I wish I had.

I did this kit some months ago, there are no obvious faults n its as clear water unfortunately I hate it!
I just don't like the flavour nothing more to say except that I have litres n litres of the stuff :(
Ill have to resort to either lemonade or the brother in law who actually seem to like the stuff...

After reading all this I'm slightly worried - this kit was my first foray into "premium kits" after being quite disappointed with my first two <£15 kits - I'm quite new at this and I'm worried I might have wasted my efforts!

Anyway, I followed the instructions quite strictly - First stage fermentation in the bucket for two weeks. I'm brewing in the loft so I have built a temperature controlled box, and I kept the temperature rock steady at 23c throughout, adding the hop bags two days before kegging.
Added the recommended 150g of priming sugar (dissolved in about 400ml of boiled water but allowed to cool to about 45c before adding to the keg.

It smelled absolutely fantastic when I kegged it.

It's been in the barrel for a week now, set at 23c for final stage, I've just turned off the heat for final clearning (room temp is 16c ish), I could move it into the shed though.

I'd not opened the box to look at it, but on inspection the plastic pressure barrel is bulging like mad, worse than any of the other kits - I presume I've jumped the gun and it's still doing quite a bit of fermenting. I'll be sure to leave it while December before even bothering to draw anything off at this rate, hopefully it'll eventually settle out ok.

EDIT: I just pulled off a mouthful, and while it's very very cloudy, it smells and tastes quite reasonable especially at this stage. It has lost a lot of the hop aroma though.

If it tastes alright now its only going to get better! The hop flavour probably will not improve but you could always add some directly to the keg in a mesh bag.

I might well do that. I was hoping for something with a lot more hop to overpower the homebrew twang I seem to be getting!
I've stuck it in the unheated side of the loft to clear, I'll keep an eye on the temperature, not sure how cold I can let it get.

It seems as though I've got a lot of learning to do after my blindly following the instructions on this one, I might pick up another kit on the weekend and give it a bit more love - use a bottle of unchlorinated spring water from the office water cooler and leave it for much much longer to ferment. Not sure what temperature to set it at? I presume a fair bit lower than the 23c I last used.

Apologies for hijacking the kit review thread!

Down the drain yesterday!
I hated this stuff, even my brother in law would barely drink it!
I made it back in July, it made up OK, no sign of infection, good temperature control etc.
I don't think there was any fault in the kit the bottom line with is that I just didn't like it.
