Mosaic/Motueka APA (Hop stand)

Postby rlemkin » Sat Sep 06, 2014 17:03

I'm continuing my exploration of hopping schedules and hops, so today we have a largely Mosaic American Pale Ale with a dash of Motueka.

All 33g of hops are going in at the end of the boil with a 30 minute hop stand and a moderate dry hop.

I've taken the advice from this new website - http://www.port66.co.uk/hop-standing/- helpful for calculating the IBUs as Brewtoad is not useful in this regard.

====
Mosaic-Motueka Hopstand
39 IBU ~5%
4.5 Litres - 69% efficiency

Recipe: https://www.brewtoad.com/recipes/only-a-hopstand

850g Maris Otter (88%)
110g Vienna (12%)
====
Nottingham Danstar
====
Flame-out + 30 minute hop stand before cooling.

Mosaic - 27g
Motueka - 6g
====
5 day dry hop

Mosaic - 10g
Motueka - 2g

Will be interested to hear how this turns out and how close you think it is to 39 IBU. Still trying to full dial-in the IBU's from hop-stands myself so will watch with interest :)

Infected :(

Going to bottle and hope... don't think the gravity is falling.

Down to 1.004 and seems to have stopped. Slightest sour note to it.. hopefully safe to bottle now. Don't think it was Acetobacter.. thankfully!

Sadly it was infected, but I have since done beers using the same method and they're really good :)

I'll be brewing one shortly where I'll dump all the hops in last min.

Make sure to have a wee look at the blog mentioned in my first post, so you can *roughly* estimate the bitterness you want :)

Indeed good read that blog post. Beersmith reckons just using my whirlpool/steep hops for 15 minutes after flameout will come out at 38 IBU for 100g hops. No other additions.
