Beavertown Gamma Ray inspired APA clone

Postby rlemkin » Wed Jul 23, 2014 16:24

Decided to write a new version of this recipe. Given that it's apparently the only attempt at a clone online I should probably at least try to update it and make it closer to the real thing. The hops have changed slightly (goodbye Magnum - hello Calypso) and if anything it has gotten even hoppier. I've original post lower down.

The 20L version is here https://www.brewtoad.com/recipes/beavertown-gamma-ray-clone-v2

Really enjoyed the can I bought the other day.. such a nice APA, but £2.80 a can. Hmmm why don't I try and brew it?

Beavertown kindly list the Malts: Simpsons Best, Caragold, Caramalt, Hops: Magnum, Columbus, Bravo, Amarillo and IBU 45 ( ABV 5.4%).

Big, hoppy and fresh. Juicy American hops added in ever increasing amounts at the end of the boil and in the fermenter to give huge flavor and aroma.

First recipe here: https://www.brewtoad.com/recipes/beaver ... -apa-clone

Me trying to make sense of ingredients is below.
===

Malt
Simpsons Best - A brand, I think they're just referring to their Pale Ale malt.
Caragold - A sweet and very light crystal malt
Caramalt - Another light crystal malt, but not quite so light. "30-37° L. Imparts a light toffee flavor and pale red color, contributes dextrins, and adds to foam stability."

Mash @ 65c

Hops

Magnum - From what I gather this has limited aroma, so I'm going to FWH it and leave it at that

FWH - 1g/L - (22 IBU)

Amarillo, Columbus, Bravo - Thinking equal additions of these at 10 minutes/ 5 minutes/ 0 minutes/ 5 day dry hop.

10 minutes - 1g/L (13 IBU)
5 minutes - 2g/L (11 IBU)
0 minutes - 2g/L

Dry hopping - 5g/L

Yeast

Rehydrating some US-05

----

Help and comments most definitely welcomed on any and every aspect! :cheers1:

Nope, that was a Citra IPA (60 IBU). Brewing this right now. For the dry hopping I'll transfer to secondary on this one and leave them loose.. they'll float, but hopefully shoogling it around each day will help compensate.

Smelling good on day two of fermentation.. dialled back the Bravo a tad and upped the Columbus going by the smell of the packet. Scientific I know ;)

First taste - this is damn good. Favourite brew today. Full recipe is here - https://www.brewtoad.com/recipes/beaver ... -apa-clone - I'd use 8% caramalt next time and no Crystal.

It's the combination of hops that does it.. lovely!

Brief feedback from homebrew club. It's a heavy Columbus brew and some people don't like that earthiness, but if you do...

Really good aroma, VERY earthy. Too earthy.
Great aroma again. Good work.

Starting to taste better as the columbus fades and allows more delicate flavours to come through

Updated the recipe to include the current hops and make it a bit closer to the real thing. Although still a very rough approximation

Have you brewed this again recently then? Had a can recently and forgot how much I like it. Keen to give yours a go soon.
