The Malt Miller when they are in stock :lol:

A fine beer may be judged with only one sip, but it's better to be thoroughly sure.

I love the creative inventive streak that's coming out here - this is how new ideas turn into new realities...

Bit disappointed that no-one's admitted to putting log shavings from the log shed into beer though. Might be worth a gallon experimental... but definitely not the whole batch. They work great on the BBQ - but the flavour added is closer to bonfire than smokey bacon.

Well, whatever we call it, this turned into a cracking drink.

I gave a load as a birthday present for my mate Steve's 55th, all feedback was extremely positive and the "leftovers" in my brew fridge seemed to go down a treat.

Thought I'd share the label with you, which I quite liked...

Well, the recipe... was it REALLY a Stout, I hear you ask?

Before we look at the gory contents, the result was a full bodied, 5.5% ale, no hop kick but a gentle bitterness that nearly balanced out the residual sugar content. Accompanied by a mild fruitiness, probably from the choice of late hops.

Enough enough of that flowery language, what was the recipe?... here we go, I've brewed it again this weekend, so any comments will be incorporated into take 3 of this...

Note this was for 55 litres...

Notes:
- Got much better efficiency than 73% - ended up with 4gals of 4% extra by continuing to sparge. This treated as a parti-gyle (ie boiled in different container with additional hops).
- Note the high mash temp - this to try to get the long chain sugars to dominate
- Used yeast from ABC brewery in Aylesbury, which for recipe purposes I liken to WPL002
- Take 2 has more Munich, less Vienna, due to stocks in the malt cupboard.
- Usual ramp up in FV temp - 18C to start, upto 22C for the last couple of days.

End result: This was one of my best brews so far (about 50 since I restarted 18 months ago) - the recipe has gone straight into favourites, would commend it to all.

Let me know if you try it, or a close variation, and your thoughts.

(It does need a low attenuation yeast - max 70%.)

That is an interesting recipe, I didn't expect that many hops in it. I'm finding it hard to decide what that would taste of.

Are you going to the festival? If so I'd be interested in some kind of bottle swap to find out.

Ping me in a month or so, when it's racked and cleared. Happy to share a bottle, or swap with one of yours that's impressed you. I've upped the hops a little, in the new batch, if I remember right, as the balance was just a little on the sweet side.

No plans for festival, getting permission to brew is hard enough. Got a burping FV in the house, as all the heaters are busy in the garage, and I'm getting evil eyes for that!
