Underletting - when to stir?

Postby Hairybiker » Tue Apr 08, 2014 10:08

Back to brewing talk.

Just moving to underletting my mash, so when do I stir it? Or don't I need to ??
The temp seems a bit higher than if I fill the MT then add the malt as well, is this normal?

When all the liquor is in then I hit it with about 5-10 seconds of my mixer paddle on the drill . . . job done.

I too have found that the strike temp needs to be a bit lower then when I don't underlet.

please note:The use of punctuation, bold, underlining, italics, and different sized type, follows the convention used in writing, for many years, to place emphasis on the point being made, and to highlight the importance of that point in the opinion of the author. It is not the intention of the author to shout, if that was the case the author would adopt the, much more recent, convention of using all capital letters.

Just give it a quick stir once you've added all your water.

As for the temperature I should imagine that you're losing less heat while transferring the water, ie keeping the lid on the mash tun.

Nope the lid is off the MT until I have finished mashing in.
@Aleman well you do have an industrial size MT there :D My little 32L would be lost inside it

Thanks for the fb will try it next time I brew, probably at the w/e.

I think the main reasons to stir after all the liquor is in, are to even the temp and to check for dough balls.
