Sending beer abroad

Postby f00b4r » Sun Mar 25, 2018 16:25

You will usually be liable for excise duty upfront, although it will depend on each individual country. You will also find most couriers will not knowingly carry alcohol.
You can risk it but it could be impounded and/or the recipient be liable for the duty (and potentially fines).
I ran into this situation even when moving house to Berlin. If I traveled in the removal truck it was okay but as I didn't I would have had to declare the Plato of every bottle and keg and pay the duty prior to traveling.
That said I know people who have sent beer and whisky to friends without be aware of these rules and it going straight through (there are some quite strange things that you cannot send via post, even between EU countries).

I declare the contents as samples of brewing yeast and that is always accepted.

Another good tip, which I do for No.1 sons hold luggage back to Switzerland is to vacuum pack the bottles individually. Then any breakages do not ruin everything as it's retained in the sealed plastic bag.
