What would you buy an Extract brewer for Christmas?

My step father is a keen extract brewer - as far as I know he uses the extract as the base and then adds the adjunct grains in a bag to the mash.

I've been advised to stop buying him whisky for christmas because he apparently has far too much (lucky man!) so I thought I'd buy him a decent stock of whatever he uses for brewing - but - as I'd like it to be a bit of a nice surprise, I wasn't going to suddenly start asking him what he uses... So, I thought I'd ask here instead for some guidance

I think he aims at roughly 20 litre final volume batches and tend to brew ales and stouts..

I had a look at the Malt Miller - powdered extract, or liquid??

Honestly, I leapt from kits straight to All Grain - I'm bloody lost

hows it going BigYin? you could get him some dried malt extract, the homebrew company probably do the cheapest, £14 for 3 kilos is decent, 3 kilos will do a 20L brew if I remember correctly. Maybe get some speciality malts and yeasts etc. http://www.thehomebrewcompany.co.uk/ing ... -3_36.html

I'm sure I've read one or more supplier sells extract clone kits.

What about this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Briess-Premium-Liquid-Malt-Extract-For-Home-Brew-Beer-Lager-Ale-Making-CHOICE/351075783017?epid=1776266096&hash=item51bdbf5169:m:mRK-Uwu-g might be crap but I doubt that he has used it before so there is the novelty factor that suits an Xmas present.

Personalized bar runner or etched glass maybe? Always make nice gifts and won't break the bank.

"Brewing Classic Styles" by Jamil has great recipes for both extract and all grain.

Thanks all

I didn't realise how expensive extract brewing is compared to all grain! You seem to be looking at 3 to 4 times the cost for any given volume :o

Maybe I should try and talk him over to the dark side..... bwa ha ha!

Probably pointless - he's never shown any interest so far.

If he’s quite happy brewing extract, get him a gift voucher and he can get what he needs.

Otherwise novelty socks/jumpers, chocolate and beer all work well as presents.
