Dark Wheat Malt

Postby Steviebobs1983 » Thu Mar 15, 2018 21:01

Anyone had any experience using dark wheat malt?

I've inherited 4kg of maris otter and 500g of dark wheat malt. Got tons of Tetnaang in various states of freshness, little bit of Chinook, some wgv and some nugget pellets.

I'm thinking there's a lager in there but never used dark wheat before, would you chuck the whole lot in (11% of the bill) or just a bit?

Lager or ale yeast?

Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

I’d just think of it as a wheat version of a darker crystal malt. Try adding 2% in a bitter/IPA along with 2-5% of a lighter crystal malt.

2016: 330L brewed (72 gallons, over 8 firkins)
2017: 105L brewed (need to update this figure)
Drinking: Landlord clone
Conditioning: ciders from 2016, hedgerow barrolo, 1914 Courage RIS (10%).

Just a quick follow up for the sake of completeness. I ended up lobbing the whole lot in (11%) and did 20g of Tettnang every 15 mins (100g in total) with bohemian lager yeast. Got around 18 litres of 6% ABV absolutely delicious lager that I will definitely be doing again.Image
