When is the best time to add lactose. I was going to add it to the keg but not sure now

you can if you want. i'd add it at flame out personally for sanitizing, even mixing. if you add in the keg, boil it for a few mins first.

+ 1 for that Rob, boil in a pan for 5 mins, let it cool and add it to the fermenter. Slightly diff to you. Also I use approx 85g per 5ltr for a Milk Stout. :thumb:

It's powdered so would have to mix first

Ok I've been advised to add at 20 mins left in the boil so I'll go with that.

Probably because dumping in a keg would make it clump and just sink. Even shaking may not disperse it properly

I somehow doubt that as that's how it used to be done, in the cask with the priming. If it didn't work they wouldn't have done it.

Maybe in the 1940s it was done like that. The advice I received came from a brewery in Manchester so I think I'll go with what they suggested
