Fish free cask finings?

Postby Patxi » Fri Jun 05, 2015 09:06

Does any one have any experience of alternatives to Isinglass for fining beer put into a cask? I hear someone mentioned Fuller's Earth as an alternative, but I know nothing about this. There's always the Moor Beer alternative of not fining, I know, but for a light coloured beer I'd like it oroperly bright.

Any suggestions welcomed

Cheers

Why bother with finings at all? Do you move the cask a lot?

+1 for not fining, good bottling process and patience does all that for you.

If the beer is bright going in it will be bright going out. You could use gelatin but that again is animal based and I doubt that vegi gelatin would have the same properties for clearing beer.

90 min boil, a little added wheat malt, irish moss, fast chilling and a highly floculating yeast are all good steps towards clearer beer.
Egg shells baked in the oven to dry then ground to a powder are meant to work. Bentonite is a clay i think, but will strip flavour out. You can also use that stuff thst prevents chill haze if you want?

Rob, how would added wheat malt help clarity? I've only ever seen warnings that it would result in reduced clarity.

Gaz at hopcraft told me his beers with wheat malt added come up a little clearer. Can't say I'm sure on the technicalities but it's something to do with the big sticky proteins dragging more out on their way down. I've had a hefeweizen with 50% wheat clear entirely by accident.
