Wild, odd, strange, fantastic and plain wrong ingredients.

Postby rlemkin » Thu Dec 04, 2014 23:09

A local brewery in Edinburgh (Pilot) has a beer filled with Parma Violets  and it was pretty damn amazing. Given that it'll be a while before I'm brewing again I think it could be fun to try and think up some crazy ingredients and things to brew that just might work.

I've been quite conservative in my brewing so far and primarily working on getting the basics right before I start experimenting. My first, rather tame, attempt was a blond ale with dried elderflowers and orange zest, although that was a bit underwhelming flavour wise.

I see a recent Brewdog beer had bacon in it... :vomit:

Have any of you experimented with unorthodox ingredients or have anything you think it could be fun to try?

Just look at any American brewing forum for ideas of what not to put in beer ;)
Mint, peanut butter, pumpkin, tequilla, chilli?????

Just remeber why these breweries are doing this (brewdog being the experts in it). Its all about publicity and ego not beer, they have businesses to run and need to stand out in a very competative market, so what do they do? come up with a gimmick which everyone tom dick and harriet in the beer world will hopefully blog tweet rave about.

These ideas may be ok for the odd pint but do you want five gallons of skittle's stout, or kangaroo testicle Pale Ale?

i certainly won't be using any weird flavours in my beer, beer should be beer and that's all i'll be brewing.i need convincing even to try the coriander and orange peel in a wheat beer.

Yes, yes and Oh Yes!!

If you want to know how good christmas tree beer can be, get your hands on "Tannenbaum" from Compass Brewery. It is very very good.

aka Cock Ale, as brewed by the legendary TubbyShaw. One of the many things about the demise of 'tother place that makes me sad. The cock ale thread. :(

I'm interested in the "wild" bit. Fruit beers from hedgerows, archaic (pre-hop) bittering and preservative herbs, that sort of thing.

Be a long time before I can get the time to start playing though... :(

Probably because people have more sense than to discuss such things on a public forum

Sorry graysalchemy but we're all adults here. So it's OK for others to swear and tell obscene jokes. I think your going overboard and need to grow up.

Wrong. He's right. Although we're pretty much the 51st State, we're not one that has legalised it. And discussing such antics on public fora puts the forum in the awkward position of having to serve up, on request, all the information requested by the police about that person.

Which we would, of course, do.

Which would make discussing such a thing on a forum such as this a very stupid thing to do.

I don't want to criticise all breweries that use odd ingredients. Some beers do turn out to be fantastic, although many are gimmicks.

Foraged ingredients sound interesting too - but the only thing locally in Edinburgh I'd want to use is gorse flowers.

Some of the reading I've done on alternatives to hops have put me off.. few people seem to get good results!

Yeah, I think it has been done. I'm sure one of the raft of breweries in Colorado has given it a go since it was legalised - although beer is probably a product it's not allowed in.

Cannabis beer exists - we're not talking about making it ourselves.

I disagree as you say it's discussing it not actually doing it. A bit overboard like I said

Pine beers are excellent, and pine has bittering properties so a great replacement for hops. Just don't go nuts and it makes a lovely robust beer.

"Cannabeer" exists too :cheers1:
