I use 100 g per litre starter. Think its the ratio recommended in the yeast book

Yes. 100g per litre will give you around 1.040, which is what is recommended for just about everything I think, apart from the first step of a bottle harvest sometimes.

To quote The Malt Miller site:
"To make a 1 litre yeast starter at 1040 add 113g
Each 1kg equals 1035 starting gravity in 10 litres, 3.27kg in 23 litres gives a starting gravity of 1050 making an end product of approximately 5%".

The online calculators will work out the DME required for a certain SG of starter, the MM quantity looks about right for 1.040.

100g per litre gives you 1.037 according to http://www.yeastcalculator.com/

I'd rather have a bottle in front of me, than a frontal lobotomy :D
