Invert sugar group buy

Postby HTH1975 » Wed Jun 14, 2017 21:32

I've been speaking to Murphys and they stock both #1 and #2 invert sugar, the Ragus brublok stuff that the likes of Theakstons and Timothy Taylor use.

They sell it in 25kg lots, so it works out at roughly £16 for 5kg before postage. You'll typically use 200g per 25L brew, so this would last you ages.

I'm wanting to gauge interest and see if anyone fancies a group buy - could split it more ways if there are enough takers.

By the time postage for the initial 25kg is figured in and also postage to you for your share, I'm thinking you'd be in it for around £20-25 for 5kg (roughly £5 per kg).

Any interest?

I bought a 25kg block of Ragus No.2 from Bako baking suppliers last year. Seem to remember it cost 30 something pounds. No price on their website you need to phone them but they were very helpful and have their own delivery service.

OK really, a sharp knife and cut it away in clumps then stuck it in a jug adding boiling wort to dissolve it.

Wow, that's a much better deal.

Would be nice to have 1, 2, and 3 invert but having 75kg of sugar is a bit OTT.

Anyone up for a group buy if we can get this stuff for £30 per 25kg?

Still got about half of what I bought last year. As I said it was £30+ can't remember the exact amount but it was in the thirty's and that was over a year ago.

I've got pricing from Bako (distributor) as follows:

£46.48 #1
£47.37 #2
£49.09 #3

This for 25kg blocks and excluding VAT.

Rough pricing on the #3 invert is £12 per 5kg inc VAT, then whatever postage will be.

Any takers?

Bit more expensive than I thought but still cheaper than Murphy's.

Your gonna get caramel notes and some colour. It's different to anything you get with speciality malts. You won't get the same result with golden syrup as it's only partially inverted (you can taste a big difference side by side).

I'd agree - invert #3 is what I'm most interested in.

So that's three of us so far...

* oz11
* jaroporter
* hth1975 (me)

I'm not dead set on needing 5kg, so more people can get in on this for sure.

i agree it's a different kinda caramel/fruitiness than malts. i made some myself that i'd guess was around no2 maybe en route to no3. i'd say there is a base syrupy flavour there (makes sense), but a lot more going on as well obviously. i made too much and ended up eating it on ice cream.. :D
