Coopers Aussie Pale Ale... Gone American

Postby Wee_Dave » Sat May 23, 2015 13:05

Got this underway today.

Image

Ingredients:
1.7kg Coopers APA tin
1kg Light Spray Malt
11g Mangrove Jacks US West Coast Yeast
25g Amarillo hops
25g Cascade hops

Image

Originally planned to use dextrose. Decided against it. Mixed it all up to 20l. Lots of clumpage , but plenty of stirring got rid of most of it, in the process giving me a sore arm.

Anyway, steeped 25g Amarillo and 25g Cascade, in 1.5l of just boiled water, for 20mins and then strained into FV, via colander. Planning to dry hop with 30g Willamette and batch prime with 90g granulated.

Yeast pitched at 23degs. OG was 1042. Looking forward to anything close to 4.5%abv. I'll take 4% though, in the vain hope of having a light, yet hoppy-ish session American pale ale style beer to enjoy our long hot summer with.

Wee Dave

FV: Coopers Australian Lager (30g Galaxy dry hop)

Conditioning/Bottled:
Young's American Mocha Porter

Planning: St Peter's IPA (50g - Topaz and Galaxy - dry hop)

Currently Drinking: Store bought beer and occasionally a Turbo Cider until the stock levels are at a reasonable level :hat:

Will do. :thumb:

I'll be getting into this after a 5/6 weeks in the bottle. The hops will obviously mask any of the "green-ness" of the beer as well as any "tang."
:drink:

Update on this one:

Dry-hopped with 30g Willamette and 25g Cascade.

Bumped them all in a sterilised muslin bag, with a sterilised teaspoon for company, and straight in the FV.

So finally got around to bottling this 'un. FG was a nice 1012. So 35 pints of 4% pale ale for a total cost of around £31.

Batch primed with 85g dextrose (using up the last of it) and bottled on 5th June. So, two weeks later, I decided to pour one....

Looked rubbish, so got a syringe involved :)

Ah, looks much better :D

So how does it taste, even this young? Bloody marvellous! Expectations totally exceeded! Hops are prominent on the nose, not overly so though. The hop infusion included at the start has certainly given this another dimension.

Carbonation is very good, lovely pour too, leaving behind a compact sediment, thanks to the Mangrove Jack yeast. All in all, for a bit extra money for the hops and yeast, this one can kit is absolutely splendid. 90p a pint?! Yes please!! :drink: :thumb:

Cheers!

good to read the outcome! It's quite amazing what a bit of added hops can do to even the most basic of kits.
