First brew since May 2018 - Orkney Dark Island

Yesterday I finally found the time to get back to brewing :D

Probably should have made a greater effort to get up early to get started, but it has been one hell of a week at work, so sod it, lie-in and then have a gentle start to the day - net result being the HLT didn't get switched on until nearly 11:30am, and the boil finished at 5pm.

By the time the chiller had done its work, and the beer was tucked away in the frementer it was heading for 7pm

Anyway, recipe called for 13.2KG of grain :D

Sparging ongoing - gravity fed from HLT to mash tun, and pumped from mash tun to boiler

With 60 litres of beer being pumped into the fermenter the first problem hit - the fermenter tap was leaking - stopped the pump, tilted the fermenter back, clearing the beer from the tap, pulled it apart again (had just reassembled it from a deep clean) and this time it held. Bit of a mop up operation.

Next problem was the brew-pi... Only way I know it's working, and can tell it what to do, is through a web interface - but if the pi isn't booting, or it's struggling to connect to the wifi, I've no way of telling, unless I unplug it, take it into the house, do what I can, then try again...

Never got to the bottom of the problem last night and was too tired to keep trying.

Needn't have worried about the cold night (fermenter is in the brew shed) - this morning the beer was still at 25c with a nice vigorous fermentation keeping it warm.

Some more faffing with the brew-pi and eventually persuaded it to work (after the 3rd re installation of the disk image..) and now it's looking after the ferment for me :D

OG was slightly(!) over at 1060 (target 1045) so if the ferment is good, this could be a nice strong beer :drunk:

That's a nice setup for brewing!

A brew day with eventualities seems to be the norm at the minute. I need to make myself a checklist to avoid silly mistakes on brew days.
