First AG brew in over six months

Postby HTH1975 » Mon Jan 21, 2019 21:16

Moving home last year put my brewing on hold from June/July. Now we’ve been settled in our new house since December, I decided it was time to break out the brewing kit from storage in the in-law’s garage.

However, I found that my half bag of Maris Otter had somehow got damp/wet. There was black mould inside the bag and clumps of damp grain plus some slugs had got in. Obviously this was unusable. This put my plan to brew into doubt.

Plan B... see if I can cobble together an IPA using whatever leftover base malts I’ve got, plus some ‘sugars’ I need to use up. Here’s what I came up with...

1.068 OG
1.012 FG
7.37% ABV
56 IBU
12 SRM (Morey)
US-05 yeast

FERMENTABLES:
2.15kg lager malt
1.04kg Vienna
500g flaked corn
610g Pilsner malt
100g rye malt
300g amber malt
430g crystal wheat 60L
300g Ragus #3 invert sugar
370g Belgian candi sugar (light)

HOPS:
18g Northern Brewer (90 min) 20 IBU
45g Cluster (20 min) 20 IBU
20g Amarillo (10 min) 6 IBU
25g Vic Secret (5 min) 10 IBU
30g Amarillo (dry hop, 3 days)
25g Vic Secret (dry hop, 3 days)

Alkalinity 45
Calcium 180
Chloride 150
Sulphate 250

All things considered, I’m very happy with this one. The wort tasted gorgeous at each stage and is now chugging along quite nicely.

2016: 330L brewed (72 gallons, over 8 firkins)
2017: 105L brewed (need to update this figure)
Drinking: Landlord clone
Conditioning: ciders from 2016, hedgerow barrolo, 1914 Courage RIS (10%).

Now, that's a use up brew :thumb: :thumb: :thumb:

I enjoy a glass of wine each night for its health benefits. The other glasses are for my witty comebacks and flawless dance moves.

Now it just needs a name and great that you have a clear out and can get new grains
