Session IPA - Chinook & Hallertau Blanc

Ex pale/carapils/30 ibu/us-05/1.038 OG/100G each Chinook & Hallertau Blanc pellets dry hop.
I thought the HB would need a pungent hop to back it up, hence the Chinook. Apparently it's similar to Nelson sauvin with gooseberry and white winey aromas, but less refined. Looking forward to seeing how it comes out.

Dry hopped tonight, both packs smelled kinda crap to be honest.

Oh dear Rob, that's strange hops normally smell fantastic = hope it's going OK

Here we go, couldn't fit another drop in the keg! Straight from the fermenter.
Interesting flavour. There's a few weird tastes in there I can't quite put my finger on but I'm not surprised as both of the hops are foreign to me. I'm getting the resin/pine of the Chinook and the fruity Blanc with some odd spicy herbal background notes. Either way, should go down a treat over Christmas.

Sounds great Rob! It's also reassuring that even pro brewers can't quite put their finger on the flavours some times! :)

To be honest I want to say spiced meat or umami, which doesn't make a lot of sense and indicates autolysis but I'm reasonably sure that wouldn't be an issue. It definitely has the citrus of a good american pale as well, so it's all good!

I did a Chinook smash back in my biab days and threw it out because it just has the weirdest almost plastic like taste to it that I was convinced it had some funky infection. Recently I used a lot of Chinook in a brew and also got a taste. It's a plastic solvent like thing, is that what your are getting or am I suffering a coincidence.

Naw none of that, but I've read before that some people are sensitive to certain hop oils, hence why some think Citra tastes catty, Chinook is the pineyest hop in existence. I'd find a beer loaded with Chinook like arrogant bastard and see if it's there for you - if so it's the hop, but plastic solvent I'd say is probably down to chlorine in water, yeast stress, chlorine based sanitizer ineffectively rinsed...have you brewed inbetween batches successfully?

Yes have brewed plently of brews inbetween with no bad tastes. Maybe its my reaction Chinook so will look for a bottle of Arrogant to test that out. What I wanted to do was make a really dank resin beer.

Try Azacca, it's very resinous but pineappley too! Mellows out after a few weeks.
