Do salifert kits expire?

While Beer is 90-97% water, it is a very tricky subject.

Do salifert kits expire?

Postby ryanshelton » Sat Mar 19, 2016 19:24

Ive got my water report done from Murphys(back in 2014) and it says alkakinity as CaCO3 is 113.
Just done a salifert kit and it came back as 62.5 so i did a test with their 'sample' and its a different reading to what they said it should be. The test must be around the same age as the water report, am i best of forgetting both and getting new ones of each?

I used to have a handle on life. Then it broke!

Have a search on the forums. They have been known to give the wrong figures out.

So would you say ignore everything they have told me and just use a Campden tablet?

I would get a real water report and use that, use the sailer kit to work out your alkalinity though and adjust it to suit the style you want to brew. Campden tablets just remove the chloramine.

Thanks, ill forget the Murphys test then! If i was to use Tesco Ashbeck water to brew with instead the water calculators advise on Calcium Chloride but it seems to be only available online and im brewing tomorrow. Would it make a massive difference if i left it out or is there an alternative?

If doing a mild I'd just use your tap water for mashing, and mash at 67/68C, then treat your water to get down to 30ppm alkalinity for sparge (that's if you do). Did a mild today and mashed with my tap water at 108, but I also added some CaCl, so well worth getting some, I get mine from

Just realised your not a million miles from me and your 108 is close to Murphys at 113 (and stw who quoted average 120) for my area so I think I've just answered my own question lol

+1 for wallybrews test. Then test your alkalinity with the salifert kit on a regular basis as alkalinity is likely to fluctuate.

Best bet is give WallyBrew a PM and get an accurate test done. :)

May salifert kit agrees with wallybrew analysis . . . And they expired in 2013!!

Go with the kit result . What it tells you is that your water is variable . . . Not necessarily that murphy's have got it wrong. They did in the past have issues and didn't have the knowledge to say that result looks wrong. I belive it has been remedied now . . . I use WallyBrew

No one has actually addressed the original question - do Salifert kits expire? Mine is marked with a best before date that's no where near (2018?). When I last tested my water the alkalinity was about 40ppm as CaCO3 but the time before it was as low as 5ppm so I used the test solution to verify and found that the result didn't match. It certainly matched when I first got the kit. There's no doubt that the alkalinity of my water has increased since a Starsan solution goes cloudy much quicker than it did but I'm not sure how accurate the reading is now. So I think Salifert kits expire sooner than the best before date suggests. I think I will get a new one. Is it also worth getting a calcium test kit?

I'm still using my test kits that expired in 2013 . . . When I send a sample to Neil I measure the Alkalinity and Calcium . . . It agrees very closely (within the limits of the kit) with what Neil reports. . . . It also agrees with the Test solution as well.
