Vermont yeast

Postby Rolfster » Wed Aug 23, 2017 14:21

Hi all

I just got some beers for my birthday.
There are a couple from the Bristol based brewery WI per and True, that has vermont yeast in it.

I'm planning on recovering the vermont yeast to use myself.
Anyone used it and got feed back?
Also does it taint the FV's?

There are also a couple of beers with vermont and safe brew YS020.... I'm guessing recovering that and adding it will result in an imbalance of yeast.

Shouldn't be any taints, it's just a saccharomyces strain with very low floc

Not sure it's worth the risk to recover a strain that's widely available for £5

A fair point Kev. Where is it £5?

It seems to be the most expensive liquid yeast at the mslt millers.

Fair point. It may not be as cheap as £5 but at £7-£8 it's still reasonable as with proper cleanliness it can be reused for many many batches.

Reason I didn't know the price is that it's about 2 years since I bought it....yet I'm consuming a pint brewed with it now!

So yesterday I drank the 2 beers I had with vermont yeast and left the dregs to warm up. Boiled 10g of light spray malt in 100ml of water. Then left if to cool. Once they were the same temperature I poured a little wort into each bottle and swirled it around. Then I poured it all into one bottle and gave it a shake. Covered it up and left it..... today it does not seem to have done anything!

So now we play the waiting game....

What temp is it stored at? I propagate at 30c. You want yeast cells not clean flavour.

I've only bought one vial of the strain and have brewed 200-300 litres of NEIPA with it.

Still got yeast left.

Keep clean and you're sorted
