Mangrove Jacks dry lager yeasts

Postby octoscott » Tue Jun 07, 2016 17:12

Anyone got any experience with these?

I've a sachet of both Bohemian M84 and Californian M54 sitting around to make a Vienna lager this weekend. Just looking to see if anyone has any feedback on which is better or more suited.

The one needed two packs of yeast, other may he the same so check the rear of the packet. Bohemian would suit a Vienna better I think...

No idea about lager yeasts, that's something I never brew and only drink abroad in hot climates.

But I have split an APA wort and brewed half with my generic Gervin yeast and half with Mangrove Jack's East Coast, and the MJ was a clear winner.

I'll go with the bohemian for the Vienna in that case and save the Californian for doing a steam beer.

I reckon that if Mangrove Jacks had brought this range out ten years ago back in the days when SO4, US-05, Notto and a couple of lager yeasts ruled the roost then Wyeast and Whitelabs would have had serious headwinds to deal with.

I used the Bohemian in a "fake Vienna" that I made from a MJ Czech Lager kit plus a brew enhancer pack that had some dark spraymalt in it - and some Saaz. We get MJ kits here in Australia, not sure about the UK, and it turned out really good - I normally brew AG but needed a quick keg filler. :thumb:
Visitors didn't realise it wasn't an AG brew.

I used the wheatbeer yeast, worked very well, tempted to use it on pretty much every brew.
