A different way to grow yeast?

Postby Rolfster » Tue May 10, 2016 10:19

So I've just obtained an 100 liter set up and was looking into pumps and it got me thinking...

Instead of growing up starters using a yeast stirrer what about using a pump to take the bottom of the starter and dribble it back into the top of the starter?
It would create a constantly poured environment so should be oxygen rich.

Just a thought!

Depending on the type of pump you use it may get clogged and would probably be a b*gger to clean. A stir plate is simple and what they would use in a laboratory.

Keep it simples I say.

It's a good point.... I haven't got a stir plate yet!
I guess I need to finish my stir plate!

Anything to do with yeast has to be not just clean but totally sterile.

Yes but if it was done in a small fv all equipment involved could be sanitised in advance.

The thing with a stir plate is that the same equipment can be used to step up cultures, just by varying the size of vessel, what you propose would probably be physically to big for a small starter.

I don't think they use stir plates in a lab. I think they use an orbital or rocking plate.
Stir plates put a lot of stress on the yeast.
If you google "yeast starter shaken not stirred" there is a lot of discussion to be found and lots of brewers have redundant stir plates.

I've a lab grade heated stir plate that I'd sell for £100 inc P&P (what I paid).
Let me know if you are interested.

I've got most of the goods to make one. They can mostly be found in an old pc.
You use the magnets out of the hard drive, the cooling fan and power supply.
I've just never finished it!

when making your own remember to use a spacer to keep the magnets equally distant from the centre while the epoxy holding them cures, I didnt and returned to find they had crept together and set off centre on my 1st attempt ;)
