Freezing hops?

Postby cononthebarber » Sat May 09, 2015 12:04

I was talking to the guy who runs Salopian Brewery the other day and particularly hop storage, I was saying how I keep all my opened packs of hops in the freezer to keep them fresh. He said this was a bad idea and that you should never freeze hops. I said that many homebrewers keep their hops in the freezer and that they dont actually freeze as there is no water content...anyway he disagreed and told me that I would be ruining my hops by freezing them...I wonder what anyone else thinks? Does anyone know of any studies on the freezing of hops and the effect on viability?

Brewing software - Promash and Beersmith has sections that deal with hops storage and how they lost aroma/flavour when stored at warmer temps.
I'll continue to freeze mine until someone provides proof that you shouldn't.

I love it when people don't give a reason when saying something in contradiction to what you believe.

I have always frozen mine as well, as long as they are airtight what is the harm? I genuinely would love to know why you shouldn't freeze them.

I have always frozen mine, but I recently saw James Kemp (of Port 66 website) saying that he freezes his T90 pellets and refrigerates his whole hops - which I had never heard before:

Exactly. How would the brewer know? he doesn't do it!
We all know some things freeze well and some things don't. Hops, IMO, freeze well. Mind you, I am coming around to the idea of pellets. They're compact. Light and oxygen doesn't get in.
