Halletauer Blanc. A Citrs alternative?

Postby Duxuk » Wed Aug 24, 2016 17:38

I'd read somewhere that Halletaur Blanc has been grown in Germany as an alternative to Citra in particular. I got the same advice from Joe at Leyland Homebrew so I took the plunge. I brewed today and must say that the bouquet from the FV is gorgeous! They have 6.4% AAs.
Has anyone tried them?
Apparently the hop situation is unlikely to improve next year so alternatives may be required for many of our old favourites.

I drink responsibly. I never spill a drop. :drink:

Yes, but I would not compare it to citra. More like a chilled out and fruitier Nelson Sauvin. US hop harvest looks on course to be up ~20%, but most of that is contracted already. Still it shouldn't be too bad.

Presumably this is what's used to brew Kronenburg Blanc? That's a beer that shocked me to my core at a festival in France a few years back as everything was boring lagers, until I tried that and it was like a breath of fruit salad aroma air.

It might be utter toss when at home and I have much more selection though ;)

I've just kegged a brew using Target to bitter then 100g Chinook at flameout and 50g Hallertauer Blanc as a dry hop. Tastes amazing! Not as citrus/marmalade as Citra but not so far away. In another brew I didn't get citrus from the H Blanc, but the combination with Chinook seems to work very well.

I drink responsibly. I never spill a drop. :drink:

Nope that has its name as it's a wit, and Blanc is white in French. That beer has been around a lot longer than the hop.
