Went for a walk the other day and found a few trees full of these fruit. They're purple skinned, a bit smaller than a small plum and greeny yellow inside. Are they sloes?

I'm guessing now is a good time to pick them.

They taste really sharp and dry your tongue when you bite into them. Is that right?

They sound like sloes. Bullace are another variety between sloes and damsons. All make delicious gin. We've got damson gin on this year as there weren't any sloes on our usual trees

There appears to be thorns in your pic which if so, Sloes are also known as Blackthorn so I'd also say that they are too.

I'm pretty sure they are sloes too albeit they look a little big. Maybe the picture is deceptive.

The wood of the branches is wrong for sloes. I'm going bullace or damson.
