Chippy

I tasted the pomegranate properly tonight

This is my favourite out of all and will be getting onto Asda deliveries tomorrow to order a van full of Pomegranate juice and also lots and lots of grape juice

Thanks Chippy will do

A question

Have you or anyone noticed in your wines

I have opened a bottle tonight that I had brought from the shed and had been in the fridge a few days and had lots of bits in it

Can't explain it, it was all crystal clear and went through a flilter so was well polished

Never seen it in any wine

I know my bottles were pristine so not from the glass

Chill haze caused by proteins, preventable by using bentonite.

I have heard of this before, but have never encountered it myself as I don't refrigerate my wines.

Are you making gallons, five gallons or both?
What do you intend to make?

Totally pissed off with Asda and I have just sent them my Victor Meldrew mail

My last order which I have taken a few hours out of my life to wait in for finally arrived.

This is where I now go into my Victor Meldrew rant

The only 2 things that were correct on the order was sugar and kitchen roll so rather than pay £3 delivery for something that was not much more to buy I told the driver to return the goods and get me a full refund

I know that sometimes certain brands are not available (or more to the point the picker could not be bothered actually looking for the brand asked for) but if I had ordered a chicken then if this was not available then you would not send me a piece of beef.

So I ordered 12 cartons of pure white grape juice, you sent passion fruit mix which has nothing whatsoever to do with grape.

I asked for a certain pomegranate juice which had a high juice content and was sent basically water with a low amount of fruit in it

I am really annoyed (as you may tell with my Victor Meldrew impression) and really disappointed that Asda who I do so much business with would actually employ people who could not be bothered searching for the stuff I ordered when I actually took so long to peruse your site and choose the stuff that was right for me.

Why not just list juice under one box and lets go for a lucky dip.

meat could be a good one as you may order bacon and get a nice cut of beef for the same price

Anyway rant over

Please refund my card and I think I will now have to look to Tesco or some other online shop to use

We shop at tesco and getting hold of wgj can be a bit hit and miss, rgj doesn't seem to be so scarce.

I feel like strangling someone

I ordered another batch online from Asda after they sent me a grovelling mail with a £10 e voucher attached but yet again grape juice was substituted, this time for apple and pear.Off it went once more and this time I never bothered with a mail

Got a mate to drive me today and I said I was going to clear the shelves of white grape juice.

Well I did just that, all 10 cartons, so there is a shortage and all down to this health bloody regime going on at the moment

I picked my pomegranate up, checked it and it was the right one, 30% pom and other stuff then me being the smart arse that I am grabbed a try of 12

Just been brewing and lo and behold I grabbed the wrong one and this has 19% with I think 9% cranberry hahaha you could not make it up

Oh well its all done along with a batch of the apple and raspberry

Thanks for the recipes Chippy

I just put a bottle of Pomegranate (last batch) in the fridge for tonight

If you can get hold of it try a red grape juice and apple, i no longer use WGJ and RGJ seems to be a lot easier to get hold of.

Hi everyone. Thanks for the great thread Chippy, I'm a complete beginner and have learnt loads!

Genius that I am, I started my first brew recently before doing a lot of reading about it. I used a very simplified recipe I found elsewhere which didn't include any glycerine, acid or tea. I've used 1.5kg sugar, 3L WGJ mixed with peach, yeast, yeast nutrient and pectolase. I've read all the previous comments now and I was wondering if its too late to add any of the missed out ingredients? The brew is almost 2 weeks old but is still fermenting.

Btw - I know 1.5kg sugar is a lot but I'm aiming for 18% as I thought it would impress my mates! The yeast packet says it can handle it. Does anyone forsee any problems with this I might encounter?

I'd also read a suggestion to do the initial fermentation in a large brewing bucket, so I did 4 days in that then transferred to a DJ. The logic behind that seemed to be that then the yeast get an initial boost of oxygen so they can get started well and multiply etc, then when the fermentation is slowing and the juice is vulnerable move it to a topped up DJ. I can see this was unnecessary from what everyone else here does, but might it have done any harm?

Next time I'm gonna go for one of the tried and tested recipes here! WGJ and mango sounds particularly good to me. Thanks everyone

It won't impress your mates at 18% it will just wreck them

The taste is nowhere near as nice when you keep the sugar down, it makes you shudder like a spirit

I tried this when I first made a few, drinkable of course and ok with soda or lemonade but far better with Chippies pomegranate, more delicate

3L WGJ mixed with peach

If this is WGJ and peach in a carton it may not turn out very well, i got some of this as we were struggling to get WGJ, i was told ion the forum that it does not make great wine, fingers crossed it turns out ok, next time try a litre of RGJ or WGJ with a litre of 100% apple juice, i prefer the RGJ version but if you like white then use WGJ. :thumb:

Due to the lack of WGJ i haven't made anything different for a while, i decided to get a couple of DJ's on the go and i will sort the bucket later in the week.

One litre of WGJ and a litre of apple and raspberry in each.

Where is the best place to get high percentage juices. All the ones I have found are very low in actual juice.

OK My Mango WoW which went down well at the Northern Get together last weekend.

2 litre Mango juice (I use Aldi's stuff)
1 litre White Grape Juice
700g Sugar.
1 tsp citric acid
1 tsp Tannin
1 tsp Youngs super wine yeast compound
1 tsp Pectolase.
1 tsp Glycerene.

Make as per the original, mine had been maturing for over a year, but should be drinkable in a few months.

Will try and get a picture of a glass of it up later.

It was only left for over a year, 'cause SHMBO didn't like it. One of the reasons I took it to the meeting was to see if there was anything wrong with it ;-). I am not a great wine drinker but thought it was ok, but it went down a storm at on Friday.
I matured it "on bulk" i.e. left it in a DJ for the past year, but it was drinkable quite quickly. About the same as the original WOW.

There was rather a sherry type finish to it maybe from the long ageing? Actually looked like a sherry as well.
