How to make a bottle Crate

Postby Moley » Sun Jun 01, 2014 17:53

First off, measure the bottles you want to store. I have a lot which are between 70 to 76mm in diameter. I decided on a 77mm square and will be cutting 3mm dividers out of mdf or hardboard which I can get from work for free. It's a packing material which just gets binned. That kept the maths simple, an 80mm square less 3mm off each dimension.

Exploded parts list:

I cut my bases 317 x 397mm out of 6mm plywood to hold 20 bottles, battens to go underneath those bases, sides out of 9mm plywood and uprights out of old greenhouse staging (2" x 1" planed, if I had to buy it).

I glued and nailed strips on to the bases.

Then glued and nailed my sides to those battens. Later I added screws, especially in the end pieces.

First crate, I cut the sides 317 x 100mm and 415 x 100mm, second one I cut 125mm deep.

I also cut a top band 75mm deep.

Upright pairs 340mm long were glued and nailed together in L shapes then glued and screwed around the base section and top band, protruding 10mm below the base and with the top band standing 10mm proud.

This offset means that they are also stackable.

When I first looked at this thread, I thought what's the matter with plastic milk crates?
Then the penny dropped, they're for wine bottles not beer bottles!
Great work Ade, a well thought out idea. :thumb:

They would certainly be quite heavy if all the bottles were full, which is why I've gone a little OTT with nails, glue and screws around the base.

However, I've got wine rack space down the cellar for well in excess of 300 bottles so these are mainly intended for empties, and to clear all of the 6-bottle cardboard boxes out of my shed and out of our utility area.

I can actually do woodwork to quite a high level. Those crates are just very roughly cobbled together, the second one took less than half an hour to make, and that's only because my chop saw has died and I had to use a jigsaw.

Chop saw with a stop set would make easy work of these, for sure. :D I couldn't live without my radial arm, if that died it would get sorted very quickly :thumb:
