My first horrible drink

Postby MrBoy » Fri Jan 13, 2017 15:20

This year I made both a whitecurrant and a redcurrant hydromel (beer-strength mead, I carbonate mine), off the back of some really interesting small-scale experiments with redcurrants and satsuma rind last year.

I only got a small amount of white-currants - enough for 3L bottled after wastage.

My gosh, it's nasty. It puts me in mind of drinking super-cheap, warm vodka. I'd never have guessed it would be so different to redcurrants, which last year came out not un-akin to sparking rose wine.

Anyone got any other horror stories... not infections or mistakes, just things which turned out horrible?

Whitecurrants have a very high tannin content, which may be why you never see them in shops.

plum and damson wine which kind of turned into sherry. not great.
plain elderberry wine - still very tart after 2 ro 3 years? maturing in DJ.

Global average carbon emissions - one ton per person per year.
Current emissions in UK – 9 tons per person per year!
Eight million tons of plastic dumped into the oceans. Every year!

Energy drink wine was pretty rough, though that shouldn't be too surprising. My attempt at booze for free's carrot "whisky" (isn't really whisky, just fermented to a high abv) turned into a really sweet liqueur sort of thing, not terrible, but not great (misunderstanding of his measurements).
Thanks for the warning about whitecurrents.

WTF did you make energy drink wine for anyway?! Was that literally just red bull with yeast thrown in? What were you thinking?

I'd have to look up the exact recipe, but it was lidl's own brand stuff boiled for a bit to try drive off the preservatives, enough sugar to get it up to abv and yeast.
It brewed dry, the flavour wasn't too bad, bit acid and maybe a tad on the dry side (if memory serves), but it had a weird habit of making you cough.
As for why... Why not? Folk make wow and syrup based wines, why not try it with energy drink (that makes me want to try making iron brew wine now)
