Wilkos 30 bottle Cab Sauv kit

Postby jonewer » Sun Jan 08, 2017 19:51

I while ago I bought myself one of these kits http://www.wilko.com/wine-homebrew-kits/wilko-30-bottle-cabernet-sauvignon-wine/invt/0318378

I think I might finally get around to putting it together, but I was wondering what I can do to improve the kit, beyond the usual extended time scales and better yeast.

Can I replace the sugar with grape concentrate? Add more oak powder? Add some grape tannin?

Thanks!

Adding grape concentrate to a budget priced kit seems rather wasteful, but you can certainly improve these by using some supermarket red grape juice (eg Lidl at 95p a litre) in place of some of the water.

The best thing you can do is to throw away the instructions or disregard their timescales, and to go 'short'. Don't aim for 30 bottles, reduce the volume and go for 26 or 27.

A bottle of Polish blackcurrant syrup would also help. Dried elderberries are ideal.
