Cleaning new stainless steel fermenter

Postby iwoo » Tue Mar 28, 2017 10:13

I have just had delivered a 50 litre stainless steel happy fermentor from Italy. It will replace my plastic fermentor. How do I clean it out before first use. It appears to be very clean inside. Do I need to passivate it ?

I don't see why you would need to passivate it. I'd just give it a good clean with warm detergent and a non-stick scourer to remove any oils then rinse with hot water. Lots of hot water.

+1 for a good clean

I'd probably boil some clean water in it afterwards too, just to be sure and get rid of any 'newness', if that makes sense.

2016: 330L brewed (72 gallons, over 8 firkins)
2017: 105L brewed
Drinking: store-bought beer as my bar is dry
Conditioning: choc-coffee oatmeal wheat stout, various ciders, cherry 'brett' brown ale, imperial Pilsner.
Fermenting: Bock (6.5%), IPA (5.5%), Pale Ale (4.5)

SS Brewtech recommend cleaning their stainless fermenters with PBW or TSP followed by passivation. I used citric acid.

i wouldnt use detergent, it leaves deposits that are hard to rinse off that can kill head retention in your brews. unscented generic laundry oxi is a good soak cleaner ;)

Brewtech also say DO NOT USE Barkeepers Friend which leads me to doubt the quality of their SS.

Not true. They do recommend it but do say not to use it on the etched volume markings or logo.
