Hop filter

Postby beer buddah » Wed Mar 08, 2017 04:58

I bought one of these few years ago and after year or so it wasn't filtering as good due to the stainless starting to sag as it expanded over time.

Also if you take it apart you will not get it back tight but if you don't open it there will be allot of hop and boil debris as per photos. I placed some stainless grids inside to stop the mesh material from sagging and blocking. To help make the mesh as tight as possible I had to drill extra holes for some stainless bolts.

The first photo was taken after and hour in boiling caustic and acid.

Now I taken it apart and some nice caustic/ acid soaked hops. No idea what issues that can cause in the boil. I wouldn't follow an ipa with a pils without a clean for sure

Rob.....i am not combining caustic soda with acid. :nono:

I steeped the filter in caustic for 1 hour at 80C then rinsed with the water from the morning dew followed by a steep in acid at 80c. Again followed by a rinse with water from the valley. After all that the following photos are an example of whats found when you take thse filters apart. I should have took a photo pre caustic/acid wash :thumb:
