New yeast handling tool...

Postby ockelford » Mon Jan 02, 2017 12:14

I've just bought myself a little toy (well two actually)...

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/High-Lab-Brac ... SwcLxYFF4m

and one of these:

I've seen a video of someone rinsing yeast, which I need to do, but I was thinking of propogating some liquid cultures I have in a 2L starter and refining out 3 or 4 half full 50ml vials from the separated starter. The video I saw (search youtube for separatory flask, yeast) showed a really clean sample being drawn off for storage / future brews.

Hope someone finds this interesting.

Excellent I was only looking for one of those yesterday. I had tried separation before with an Imhof cone which I had lying around. The yeast separated nicely in it but the opening in the bottom of the cone was too small to allow the yeast to flow through.

We've been watching the same videos - I've got the same items bookmarked on eBay.

2017: 105L brewed (need to update this figure)
Drinking: Landlord clone
Conditioning: ciders from 2016, hedgerow barrolo, 1914 Courage RIS (10%).

I bought one of these and it eventually worked. My one came with a glass tap which is fine only the hole bored into it is too small and the thick yeast would not flow. A friend of mine works in a glass workshop so he had the right drill to bore it out and now it works fine. :thumb:

Interesting about the small bore stop cock, I'll consider looking at that if I have any congestion, or just not let the yeast cake compact quite as much (leaving more separation to occur in the vial perhaps? I thinki it will be a good thing overall though, can't wait to try it though!
