Finally drilled some holes in my mash paddle.

These are 8mm diameter. I've not decided whether I should make them larger or drill more of them.

It does a good job already though.

If they are too big the dough balls go straight through them!

Ha im too chicken to attempt to pop holes through mine, i just twist the blade and chop thru the mash both up n down as well as side 2 side, Also i find Underletting the liquor into the tun and letting it rise through the well mixed grain bed seems to produce much fewer dry patches and dough balls than when filled from the top..

Totally agree i underlet into the mash tun now (advised to when i spoke to a profesional brewer about the same problem your having) and now i have a lot less problems with clumping of the grains and less mixing to do as well

I use a SS whisk to agitate as I add the grain, it only takes a couple of minutes to add all the grain and I have never seen any clumping if grain in all my brews.
