The topic is about herms coils and what materials, could be used copper can be used both as a herms and also if wanted a wort cooler which gets boiled in the wort the last 15 mins to sanitize.
I understand all the concepts of herms as the coil is used to maintain a temperature when wort moves through the inside of the coil and recalculated through your mash tun.
Thermos pot is in turn controlled by a pid and relay sensors are used by pid to monitor and maintain a set temp by cylcling herms pot element on and off.
There are links for star San somewhere on the forum I would post but limited to my kindle at the moment.
As,with all chemicals care has to be taken as star San can also harm kitchen worktops due to acid . Trust me I learned the hard way.
Viodene seems a good option especially if I do make a herms and the coils been laying dormant for months and want to sanitize it.
Just in case some mould or yeast gets in their or circulate hot water through it
I think most of the time as most have pointed out a herms coil doesn't need sanitized as the wort gets boiled anyway but it's personal preforance at the end of the day.
Will build a herms pot next year as would like to do a stepped mash but I will not be doing so without consulting other members on here first As I don't want
