PID Wiring

Postby RidleyRumpus » Sun Aug 23, 2015 21:42

I have a SESTOS D1S VR 220 pid that I want to use for regulating the temperature of my electric smoker, but will be also using to monitor a HERMS and I have been looking how to wire it up.

I found this diagram on the web

http://grizzlybearloveskolsch.com/wp-co ... wiring.jpg

from this article

http://grizzlybearloveskolsch.com/igloo ... omment-110

But cannot for the life of me see why has has two mains plugs in, surely you would just use one and have a terminal block inside the case, or am I missing some reason for the way he has done this.

BTW any better diagrams/instructions for this PID would be welcome.

I cannot see why you would want to do that. The PID will draw next to nothing so will be fine on a single 13A plug. That is how I have mine connected.

Thanks for that.

As I will be using this outside I am trying to be as safe as possible, now I could use a plastic elclosure but that would have problems dissipating the heat, or I could use a metal enclosure. Both are waterproof BTW but I suspect if I was to use the plastic case I would have to cut a hole in it for the heatsink which would make it not very waterproof.

I suppose it comes down to how much heat the SSR will dissapate when drawing about 10A.

Also what would people recommend re isolating the heating element should I want to do so.

You can have a look at post which has some pics and a crude but simple wiring diagram with an isolator switch.

Your setup looks very neat Stevie - something to aspire to! My next project is to do a kettle HERMS similar to yours...

and

Also, which kind of wire did you use to go from the PID to the connector on the box?

Yep those are the very same.

From the PID to the xlr socket, I cut a piece off the end of the PT100 cable (about 100mm or so) and used it.

Nice one cheers mate. Not sure how long my cable is and if I can afford to lose any. I found some wire Vossy linked to on the other place so added it to the order.

Does anyone know what happened to Vossy by the way? I assume he's on here somewhere

It's been some time since I have worked with temperature senders but from memory the PT-100 needs compensating cable and has special connectors not sure I would select that sensor? NTC sensors are more common for brewing use. The positive or negative coefficient is a little beyond my ken, but I would tend to follow the crowd and use negative.
