HERMS - I need small and portable... Ideas?

Postby Pjam » Sun Jul 19, 2015 21:27

Can anyone point me in the right direction? Vessel, pump etc etc. Low budget too.

It needs to be basic. My kit all comes out of the shed and set up in the kitchen. I'd like more control over the mash and step mash.

Just the HERMS pot? Asparagus steamer is a good size ~3 litres. With full volume BIAB I've managed with a 24v solar pump but water to grist ratio is high so a lower quality pump seems to do the job.

Done 4 brews with this set up. Gets put away in the cupboard after each brew. Everything but PID controller fits in main pot

we use an asparagus steamer too but ours is 2.5 litres. The pid etc is enclosed in a project box and all unplugs and packs away great. We brew in the kitchen too so has to be a small set up

A few pics when we were making our herms and showing that the herms and pid etc fits on a beer crate

The probe sits just near the flow out of the pot and just plugs in to the pid and project box via a 3 pin din plug

The budget method would be to use a kettle controlled by a PID with your coil inside.
A brown solar pump to recirculate is fine and would probably need a speed controller to slow it down if anything.
For BIAB you could use the PID to heat the mash directly if you can keep the bag away from the element.

Something like this (RIMS)

Brilliant, thanks guys :) Just the kinda ideas I needed. Perhaps the setup helps filter the grain too?

Any tips on a PID ?

I use a Sestos + SSR but the Inkbird one looks to be an exact copy.
Buy a decent PT100 as the PIDs are normally supplied with low grade K or N type ones which last one brew.
The circuit is pretty simple.
