Cheers Phil, it's going well.....but it hasn't made beer yet!

Anyway, today's efforts. I cut a pair of mounting rails for the lcd panel from some scrap sheet and punched some holes in them;

Image

then plug welded these to the opening made yesterday.

Image

A fit-check to make sure I've not had a brain-fart...

Image

All good.

I'll spare you the tedious wire-brushing, filler, sanding, primer, more sanding more primer, paint, paint, paint rigmarole because its the most boring part of any project/repair involving sheet metal (for me at least). Anyway here is the finished lower shroud;

Image

Its now metallic blue because I didn't read the can label properly...I quite like it!

Stay tuned for assembly and maybe, perhaps some brewing!

Well, it's assembled. Here's a grainy shot of the mains wiring going in;

So, does it work.....well not quite yet. During the course of the project I decided to switch from a 2 line 16 column LCD to a 4x20 version as the later versions of ArdBir support this. The backlight of the larger LCD then appeared to be drawing enough current to shut down the power supply on the electronics board (LM7805 for those interested). To fix this i swapped the power supply circuit for a higher-power switching version based on LM2596 (module off ebay for a couple of quid). Still seemed to be drawing over an Amp so I investigated further.
Turns out I'm a bit slow. The new LCD requires a current-limiting resistor for the backlight (so it can be driven from a range of voltages), where the old one was designed for 5V only and therefore included this component. So, all I need to do is add a component costing about 5p, which I already had and it'll work just fine. I spent three days like this;

Probing and measuring to find a non-existent fault.... :D

Oh well, its all part of the fun!

Hi, this is beautifully done...

I have one question though - is the braided hose to the pump silicone? I got some and they were black rubber and made the water I pumped stink of rubber... Was wondering if silicone ones were available...

IT LIVES!!!

Image

We'll see how it works this weekend I hope. I had quite a bit of fun doing this...

Some lessons I learnt that might be of use to anyone attempting a similar sort of project;

The electronics is fairly simple, but I'd recommend getting the single board form ArdBir. It looks well made and easy to wire up so it should just work.

LCD module datasheets can be a bit vague regarding backlight power supply. Check the module to see if it has the current limit resistors in place. Mine were 0 ohm so I needed an external resistor.

Hole saws form screwfix work fine in stainless. Go slow and lubricate well.

Cutting gaskets from silicone sheet is difficult with a knife. Get some saddle punches, they are cheap and work well. Alternatively, use a bit of pipe sharpened with a file.

Probably worth getting the upper and lower filter plates made by someone like Inoxia ltd. They trade on ebay and this will save a bit of work.

Stainless is ok to solder using plumbers solder and flux. Just make sure it's WRAS approved/lead free and clean it in hot water after.

Ockelford, the braided hose I used is a a standard type tap connector from b&Q or screwfix... it says its WRAS approved for potable water to 85C so should be fine. Ill do a full flush and clean tomorrow and if it seems rubbery I'll replace it with silicone hose and fittings I got from solarproject.co.uk. The fittings are 1/2 BSP and will fit with no modification.

Tata for now.

Burco Mash-Matic .
Is that the one with the "SkidKing " self-locking dual-fade brakes , or the Futuroidal Tap-A-Toe gearbox?

Can't miss with a name like that .
