Barnsley Brewers new HERMS build

Postby BarnsleyBrewer » Sun Apr 06, 2014 13:51

I had to totally change my shed around to accommodate the new equipment and bigger vessels..
I also had to rip the old brew stand to bits and extend it. :(
Image
Image

On with the build, not much room in a 8 x 6 shed... :o
Image

Starting to take shape, fitted a shelf for the pump to go below the HERMS.
Image
Image

Got the controller on now, need to sort out the electrics.
Image

More porn to follow, been at it 6 hours today... 10/09/10 :D

Another Update........... (hope I'm not boring ya) ;)

Sorted out the HERMS copper coil. (I can see now why most put the element in the centre with how awkward is was with the copper. :o
Image
Image

Decided to use a standard tank connector that I cut down and made the hole slightly larger to accommodate a 15mm elbow.
Image
Image
Image

I slitted the flange slightly to encourage more drain off.
Image

There's less room to play with on the undercarriage than I thought

Image

The drain is now complete, need to sort out some insulation and replace the cover.
Image

Going back in the shed now to do some more, need to connect the HERMS today 18/09/10 :D

Here We Go Again................... more porn :D

Made a start on the pipework... I know copper will loose more heat than silicone tube but I personally think it looks more like a brewery with plenty of copper.... (wonder if I'll get copper poisoning) :hmm:
Image
I connected the pump like Unclepumble did his... By having the valve between flow and return, it works great, you can really control the flow without pressurising the pump.....Thanks' Uncle.P :thumb: :thumb:
Image

Pipework finished

Image

Got flow :D :D :D :D
Image

I've also connected my HLT to the pump system for sparging, going to let it run through the HERMS set at 75c
Image
Nearly there!!!!!

Maiden Brew Day...........

The first problem I had was running the HERMS pump to quick at first, the grain bed set.... Quick stir and off again on a slower flow.. (Should the pipe go lower on the sprayer)?
Image

Ran at 65c - 66c for 75 mins then at 70c for 15mins
Image

Sparge over
Image

Second problem was I forgot to remove safety cut-outs on elements, had to drain 50L of wort out at 85c

Got a fantastic boil going with the added insulation and also piped all the steam outside
Image
Image

Cleaning out the Mastun
Image

Being a tight Yorkshireman I had to get the last drip out.. ;) ;) ;)
Image

Nice clear runnings....

Image

Hardly any wort left in by tilting the boiler
Image

Set-up 2015
Image

All in all I would say the HERMS experience is not a life changer but it makes fantastic clearer wort and reduces the froth on the hot break with less crap going into the copper.....
Would I recommend?????????? YES

Forgot to mention at the start of thread I did this in 2010 but wanted to get it from THBF...

Got it from work Bob, we stripped down an old machine and I borrowed some.
It's Bosch extrusion frame, bit like Mechano where it all bolts together.

Nice saved post, hoping to do the same before I get spotted and banned.

Do those insulating jackets come off and on easily? I've got a very similar construction, less neatly done, same pots etc. Havn't bothered with insulating as I expect they'll get in the way and get sticky wort between them and vessel. It's that foil bubble wrap stuff thats surprisingly expensive isn't it?

They come off easily to clean because they're held on with elastic jointed with Velcro...
I got the insulation from B&Q and I tripple layered it for less heat loss..

If i was you i'd insulate the sides and have a good base for the boiler that we insulate too!!
You'll get a more vigarous boil by doing this..

Great thread on the build and very inspiring!! I've cribbed loads of ideas to incorporate when I begin the new build, including lots of copper and valves! I was planning on having the recirculation coil inside the HLT, with the HLT being heated and controlled by PID. Is there any benefit to having a separate HERMS heater or will the HLT do the same job?

Some guys used all stainless valves but I went for the cheaper option.

Don't forget to take plenty of pics and post a few, cos it's always great to look back at your build a few years on...

There's been some great beers made like that! Keep the faith!

There'll be plenty of pics taken but don't hold your breath - have to empty my very full shed into storage and dismantle and dispose of the asbestos mess that currently stands there before I can move in with the 360 digger to dig the foundations of the new one! Feeling very excited though, it'll be an experience and a very rewarding one once the first brew comes out!

I remember this thread from the other forum!
I'm in two minds whether to hard plumb my 3 vessel system at the moment... Is the only bit of yours that isn't permanent the copper?
How do you clean the other vessels?

It all dismantles with the use of brass compression joints in various places and as for cleaning I just give everything a really good rinse and dry after use.
Drying is more important during the winter because you run the risk of growing mould.
