Postby brewington » Fri Jul 03, 2015 21:38

Hey all,

Wanting to experiment a little with small batches in 1 gal demijohns to create some great brews which i can then make more of! Any ideas of a starting point- everything i look at seems to be 5 gallon.

All grain, extract? I love 1 gallon brewing. I'd start with a barley wine for winter, just a strong english ale basically :)

Personally, 1 gallon brews are too much effort for all grain. If I was you I would focus on Hop combinations and timings. practice with pale extract and get your hop schedule nailed, then when you're happy with your hop profile you should scale up the recipe for an allgrain batch and then with each try focus on the malt profile.

 Erm... when you say hop schedule... Sorry I really am a newbie and doing my best to learn.
What sort of ratio would I need for extract etc?

Hey Guys,

Looking at starting my first freestyle brew with "cascade" hops, do you have any thoughts on these? Is there a better type you recommend?
Think I am going to use what the video suggested and get some dried Malt (have seen this in wilkinson's) and start with that as it looks simple and hopefully It will be drinkable... and I dont wreck it :electric:

that should do the trick. cascade are nice, classic US hop.

if you're going to boil up a gallon, try to input your volumes into a calculator as close as possible. hop bitterness can vary wildly at lower quantities so you want to get that right!
