Maris Otter 25 Kg Bags

The main ingredient

Maris Otter 25 Kg Bags

Postby Kloorob » Thu Feb 04, 2016 11:46

Hi,

I normally buy my MO in 25Kg Bags, and have been more than happy with Crisp. However, I am coming to the end of my current batch, and was thinking of trying a different brand. I generally source my malts from Rob at MM, which I am always pleased with the quality of the goods.

Therefore, I would like to try what could be classed as a "High End" MO malt, and hence have you any recommendations for an alternative brand that I should be trying?

Thanks.

If you want to stick with using Rob then the Thomas Fawcett Maris Otter is the only other real option. I doubt you will notice any difference between that and Crisp though. Personally I really like Crisp Malt.

Have you tried the Crisp Pale Ale Malt which is Flagon, I prefer that to the Maris Otter.

TBH, many would be hard pressed to tell the difference between MO and pale ale malt. Especially if there are a few other character malts in the grist too.
I use Fawcetts MO as it is what my local micro uses.

If I'm brewing a continental style, a good choice for base malt is Dingemaans pale ale malt which is a bit richer/bready than English malts.

Thanks for your comments, and one thing that I should had mentioned is I tend to prefer light coloured ales, and often just use 100% MO as my main grain bill.

You could try Golden promise, also sold by Rob, a bit more expensive as it's organically grown.

You can get floor malted Warminster MO but I've no idea if it tastes any different.

Would that be low colour MO, lager malt - or something different altogether?

I know Rob doesn't sell Low Colour MO from memory, as it's pretty much the only reason I ever buy from anyone else!

Charles Faram (www.wellhopped.com) seems the best price on 25kg bags that I've found -£17.10 for Maris Otter. Postage was about £6-8, which is about the going rate. I'd probably order 3-4 bags of 25kg base malts to make it worthwhile (and save on courier costs), then split with other local home-brewers.

2016: 330L brewed (72 gallons, over 8 firkins)
2017: 105L brewed (need to update this figure)
Drinking: Landlord clone
Conditioning: ciders from 2016, hedgerow barrolo, 1914 Courage RIS (10%).

Not quite I'm afraid...

We pay about £60 for a half palette.

Same here. I think it is worth the little extra cost.
