They look the same and smell the same to me....... are they the same? or at least could I get away with Amber instead of the Dark Crystal that I appear to have almost run out of?

I was chewing amber and light crystal on Sunday as I couldn't remember what amber tasted like and wanted crystal 40 as a comparison.

Beer Smith thinks amber should be used to add biscuit flavour but I thought it tasted much more of toast. I put 150g in my most recent beer so I'll find out for sure in a couple of weeks.

Never enough time....

Ah OK. Thanks Ed ...... you know I have used Amber before and I'd say yes, tis quite biscuit. Seems you were asking yourself the same question I was.

amber is more like a super pungent maris otter than a dark crystal. don't sub one with the other!

I'm sure you could sub one for the other. It won't make the same beer but it should still be a good drink.

Interesting stuff ..... I should know more about the production process. I assume that would explain the different malts.
