Flaked wheat same as torrified wheat?

Postby StevieDS » Fri Feb 27, 2015 09:36

I'm planning to brew a lambic soon for the 2017 NHC competition (have to plan ahead for these things) but the recipe I'm looking at is 60% pilsner and 40% flaked wheat. Now neither of the homebrew stores I use have flaked wheat but they do have torrified wheat.
What's the difference, if any? 40% seems like a lot of torrified wheat, I know some here can't stand the stuff :D

Planning: Brett Amarillo Smash
Fermenting: AG52 Brett Saison v2, AG41 Lambic v2.0
Conditioning: AG51 Brett Saison, AG48 Biere de Garde, AG42 Westvleteren XII Clone, AG29 Lambic v1.0
Drinking: AG51 Brett Saison v1, AG53 Standard Bitter

Hi Torrified is not flaked so the grains are still whole. Torrified is also known as devils toenails and at that percentage would undoubtedly be utterly horrible unless you like shreadies.

You can buy Flaked from the malt miller here

I am quite fond of shreddies but maybe not to drink.
Yeah malt Miller's selection is great, unfortunately I live in NI so the shipping is fairly hefty. If I can't find it else where I may have to pay it though.
