Another bulk order topic (Malt Miller)

Postby robwalker » Tue Feb 03, 2015 18:39

Hello!

I usually pop to my LHBS to buy my stuff, but as I'm moving, I'll soon have the space to store a bulk of grain, so I'll order a 25kg bag.

What brands do people recommend? I would be happy with quite a clean base malt because I usually mix 50/50 Lager and MO malt.

After that, what can I order that's fun? I want some smoked malt, aromatic and special b, but after that I'm open to ideas. I can order basics from my LHBS (pale/lager, amber, roasted barley, crystal etc.)

I seem to mostly brew pale beers and english types.

I know you might want to chuck some money towards the malt miller but nothing wrong with a bit of competition

Harrybrew69 is doing 25kg for £19.20 right now which is a fantastic price. :thumb:

fwiw ive been using fawcetts from the malt miller and have been very happy, last brew tho was a disappointment i cant blame the malt i mashed OK i just cocked up everything else :) I also got crisps last time too, in pouring into the storage bin its got a different nose to it, nothing bad, in fact very nice ;) tho ive not used it yet so cant say much more. But i like the commercial pints using it..

The maltmiller web site has a lil bit of info on the grains they supply..

I really like Crisps malts, both the pale ale malt and the Marris otter.

So would pale malt suffice for basically all styles? With 25kg I'd like to brew quite a range of beers, american pale ales, stouts, english bitters, saisons etc...

If you have the room I'd get some weyermann pilsner malt (25kg) and some dingeman pale ale malt (25kg) these can be single temp mashed or step mashed and decoction is fine too .
other malts would be ,
carawheat
carahell
special b
flaked wheat
munich 1
acid malt
that should get you most brews sorted

Carahell sounds nice for a pale ale! I don't want to order 50kg of grain however, it'll take me a lifetime to get through 25kg! hahah.

I use my 25kg sack of Crisp maris otter to make everything - bitter, pale ale, lager, wheat beer, stout, mild... Like Rob I don't want more than one sack on the go at a time.

I tend to buy a 25kg sack of pale malt for the bulk of my beers but if I'm making a mild I will buy just what I need of mild malt for a single brew.

Crisps malt is my favourite too , I find that I get better efficiency and clearer wort with it :thumb:

Another +1 for crisps here. I tend to brew APA's, English ales and stouts. Works well for me.

A fine beer may be judged with only one sip, but it's better to be thoroughly sure.

How long would it take to use 25kg? What is its shelf life?

Whole grains last longer than crushed, OK if you have your own mill but most of us don't

I think you would be perfectly fine keeping crushed malt for 6 months, maybe longer. As long as you keep it dry.

As for how long it takes to use it, that depends on how often you brew.

If you worked on the principle of brewing 5 gallons a fortnight, that would be approx 4kg of grain per brew, so it would last 12 weeks.

My 25kg of Dingemanns Pale Malt should be turning up today, I normally Use Crisp Pale Malt but have a couple of Belgian beers in the pipeline, which is going to use up 20kg. (10 gallon batches)

I think the Malt Miller marks the best before date as one year after he crushes it. The date put on by the maltster for the uncrushed grains is 2 years after malting. I've got various speciality grains that are well past this and they seem absolutely fine to me. As GDB says, make sure it's stored dry.

Off topic from the original post, but talking about how long stored crushed grains last, I can keep my grain dry, but keeping it relatively cool is my problem.
.
Ideally I want to keep it in my shed in an old plastic mango butt, but I think the shed will be too warm, even though it is well shaded and feels cool when you walk into it on a summers day. Would love to get a grain order in, but worried about the storage.

How cool does it need to be kept?

Just buy it.. I worried about storing mine for a while but thought I might aswell just go for it. If you get half way through it and start noticing strange tastes or drops in efficiency then you know something is wrong. I stopped worrying about mine and its been fine.

Okay thanks, that's reassuring. I'm only really buying 25Kg as it is the cheapest way to buy it, so if I lose a few kilo's then not a big issue
